As the rainy season starts, usually children suffer from viral infection in eye flu or viral conjunctivitis, a troublesome eye disease. Hot and humid conditions aggravate such eye infections.

Symptoms

Red, swollen eyes

Watery discharge from eyes

Swelling of conjunctiva

Severe itching

Pain in eyes

Blurring of vision

Lid swelling

Feeling of discomfort and foreign body sensations in eyes.

Predisposing factors

Disease is caused by virus infection like adenovirus, herpes simplex virus, myxovirus and pox virus.

Most of the viral infections tend to affect the epithelium, both of the conjunctiva and cornea.

Because the disease is highly infectious, once a child becomes infected, the entire family may also catch the infection.

There is a myth that the disease spreads just by looking into an infected eye but this is not true. Fingers pick up the virus if we touch the infected eye and get transmitted.

Several children contract eye infections from swimming pool.

Prevention

Avoid going to swimming pool which has regular chlorination of water.

Avoid shaking hand. Wash your hands with soap after handshake.

Clean your eyes with clean water two to three times a day.

Don’t use common towel or handkerchief.

Personal hygiene should be good.

Treatment

Wear dark goggles.

Use anti-allergic eye drops three to four times a day.

Cold compress gives soothing effect to eyes.

Disease is usually self limiting.

No specific effective treatment is known. But to avoid secondary
bacterial infection broad spectrum antibiotic eye drops may be used three to four times a day for about seven days.

Usually the disease has a self limiting course of five to seven days.

Steroid eye drops should never be used in eye flu. If needed, should
be given after consulting an eye specialist.

Eye makeup is hard to remove because of the delicate area around your eyes. However, if not removed properly, makeup can cause the skin in that area to blacken. It can also result in the formation of wrinkles. Before you use your face cleanser, follow these simple eye makeup tips and tricks to remove eye makeup.

Eye Makeup Tips:
1. Apply a few drops of eye makeup remover on a cotton ball. You could alternatively use olive oil or Vaseline. Wet the cotton ball appropriately.
Working with one eye at a time, close your eye and move one of the cotton balls over your eye lid and lashes. Let it sit for a minute so it can work its way through the layers of makeup.

2. After a minute, gently swipe your eye in a downward direction to ensure all the eye makeup is off.

3. Open your eye and clean any residual makeup under your lashes.

Injury to the eye or infection may lead to corneal ulceration. Delay in corneal ulcers treatment, unhygienic conditions and poor diet may cause corneal opacity and blindness.

Cornea is a transparent, avascular structure in front and centre of the eye. Any Injury to he eye or infection may lead to corneal ulceration. Delay in corneal ulcers treatment, unhygienic conditions and poor diet may cause corneal opacity and blindness. Being the most anterior part of eye ball, the cornea is exposed and hence prone to infection. Cornea is protected from minor infection by the normal defence mechanisms present in tears. If due to any reason quality or quantity of tears becomes poor, chances of corneal ulcer will be more.

Corneal Ulcers Causes:
Any kind of injury to cornea.
Corneal infection- bacterial, viral or fungal allergic most of the times corneal infection arises from exogenous source like infected foreign body, infected vegetative material and water borne(from swimming pool) or air borne infections. Because cornea is an avascular structure endogenous infections are of rare occurrence.

Corneal Ulcers Symptoms:

1. Severe pain in eye

2. Redness

3. Continuous watering from the eye

4. Intolerance to bright light

5. Discharge from eye especially in bacterial corneal ulcer.

6. Blurred vision due to corneal haze.

7. Swollen eye

Corneal Ulcers Prevention:

1. Incase of any infection, clean your eyes 2-3 times a day with clean water.

2. Immediately start broad spectrum antibiotic eye drop 3 – 4 times a day.

3. Hot fomentation gives comfort, reduces pain.

4. A balanced diet rich in vitamins helps in early healing.

5. Never use steroid eye drop as it causes corneal opacity and blindness.

6. Consult an eye specialist.

Corneal ulcer is an acute emergency and may lead to dreaded complication like corneal perforation, corneal opacity and blindness.

In India 30 million people are blind due to corneal infection. Once corneal opacity develops it requires corneal grafting. For corneal grafting there is requirement of cornea. In our country there because of lack of awareness of cornea donation.

Eyes are the windows of your soul. It is through your eyes that you see the world and its one of god’s greatest blessings along with the other five senses. There are several age-old practices to keep your eyes healthy for a long time. In ancient times there were no glasses and contact lenses. A simple kriya mentioned below might help solve this mystery.

Eye Exercise 1: Sit in vajra asana by folding your knees behind and sit on your legs. You can choose any other comfortable position too, if this is difficult but keep your back straight.

Keep a diya at a distance of two feet at the eye level. Light it with cow ghee.

Stare at the lit diya, at the bluish centre of the flame with a steady gaze. Continue gazing, even if the eyes start watering. Do it for about 10 minutes in the beginning, slowly increase the duration till whatever time you are comfortable.

Then slowly get up and fill your mouth with water. While keeping this water in your mouth wash your eyes with tap water. Then spit the water out. This water will be warm because heat gets released from the body. Do this at least twice or till the water temperature gets normal. This is a must after tratak.

Daily practice of this not only improves eyesight but makes your eyes lustrous and attractive.

Eye Exercise 2:Followed by sanatan kriya, the practice opens up etheric channels called nadis in the subtle body and generates intuitive abilities in the practitioner. Combined with chakra santulan pranayam, it endows one with improved eyesight and increased concentration. Along with this kriya, you can add walking with bare feet on grass to your daily routine. Do this early in the morning or around sunset, especially those people who often wear restrictive footwear. Since there are reflex connections between the soles of your feet and your visual areas of brain, such a walk is not only relaxing but also has a beneficial effect on your eyes.

For good eye sight, it is important to maintain and preserve the visual function throughout one’s lifetime.

Diet: For healthy functioning of eyes, one needs sufficient quantity of vitamin A, green leafy vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, meat (especially liver). A balanced diet with right proportion of proteins, carbohydrates and fats will help in keeping eyes healthy. For infants, mother’s milk is very important. It is during the time of weaning, that infants can develop vitamin A deficiency that may lead to a permanent impairment of vision.

Hygiene: Keeping eyes clean is important to ward off infections. First thing in the morning is to clean the eyes in running tap water. Do not splash water into eyes since it can result in an abrasion and the lids close as a reflex action without any cleansing being achieved. One should clean the after coming back from outdoors as well as before going to bed. It is equally important to have good hand hygiene. Do not touch your eyes with dirty, greasy hands. Make sure you sanitize your hands at regular intervals.

Desk jobs: Jobs are getting oriented around computers and laptops, it is important to take few precautions:
1.	Computer screen should be kept 30-50 cm away from eyes.

2.	Top edge of the screen should be in line with eye level.

3.	The chair should be ergonomically designed for comfort and correct posture.

4.	Take a break every 20-30 minutes to walk 20 paces, look beyond 20 feet and blink completely 20 times.

5.	Increase font size for comfort and adjust picture quality for comfortable viewing.

6.	White background generally gives less strain as contrast is more.

Special instructions for students:

1.	Read in adequate light. Keep a table lamp handy. Light should fall on the reading material from front or right to left.

2.	Maintain correct posture; do not read lying on your belly.

3.	Adequate sleep is important.
