Dandruff is medically known as Seborrhoea. It is not just dryness of the skin. Actually, the word “Seborrhoea” means “too much oil.” Seborrhoea is also known as Seborrhoeic Dermatitis or common Dandruff. Skin has a natural mechanism that its cells flake off regularly. Skin contains glands called Sebaceous glands. Function of these glands is to keep our skin moist. The function of these glands is to release oily material or discharge, which is known as Sebum.

Dandruff is not a yeast infection. Simple Dandruff does not cause hair loss. Excessive flaking can also be a symptom of Seborrhoeic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Fungal infection or excoriation associated with infestation of head lice. Dandruff is a global phenomenon and many people find that Dandruff can cause social or self-esteem problems. treatment may be important purely for sychological reasons.

Dandruff Causes:
1. Skin oil commonly referred to as Sebum or sebaceous secretions;
2. The metabolic by-products of skin microorganisms (most specifically Malassezia yeasts);
3. An individual susceptibility.
4. Due to stress

The above four are major causes of dandruff on which one should take care.

As the rainy season starts, usually children suffer from viral infection in eye flu or viral conjunctivitis, a troublesome eye disease. Hot and humid conditions aggravate such eye infections.

Symptoms

Red, swollen eyes

Watery discharge from eyes

Swelling of conjunctiva

Severe itching

Pain in eyes

Blurring of vision

Lid swelling

Feeling of discomfort and foreign body sensations in eyes.

Predisposing factors

Disease is caused by virus infection like adenovirus, herpes simplex virus, myxovirus and pox virus.

Most of the viral infections tend to affect the epithelium, both of the conjunctiva and cornea.

Because the disease is highly infectious, once a child becomes infected, the entire family may also catch the infection.

There is a myth that the disease spreads just by looking into an infected eye but this is not true. Fingers pick up the virus if we touch the infected eye and get transmitted.

Several children contract eye infections from swimming pool.

Prevention

Avoid going to swimming pool which has regular chlorination of water.

Avoid shaking hand. Wash your hands with soap after handshake.

Clean your eyes with clean water two to three times a day.

Don’t use common towel or handkerchief.

Personal hygiene should be good.

Treatment

Wear dark goggles.

Use anti-allergic eye drops three to four times a day.

Cold compress gives soothing effect to eyes.

Disease is usually self limiting.

No specific effective treatment is known. But to avoid secondary
bacterial infection broad spectrum antibiotic eye drops may be used three to four times a day for about seven days.

Usually the disease has a self limiting course of five to seven days.

Steroid eye drops should never be used in eye flu. If needed, should
be given after consulting an eye specialist.

Ageing is a natural process. Accept this fact and make the best of it at every age and stage.

Here are a few tips:

Make use of your time. Put your wisdom, experience and your capabilities to good use. A community always needs volunteers for teaching children, telling them stories from our classics, the Panchatantra, Mahabharata or the Ramayana are a wonderful way of passing on some wisdom and getting joy. The enjoyment is on both sides.

Develop a hobby, something you enjoy doing, for the sake of doing. Things you did not had time during your working years but now you do. Writing, painting, playing, cards, gardening or music. It could be any of these.

Don’t be a back seat driver, allow your children to use their discretion and choice, instead of constant interference and advice. When they need advice and ask for it, then do give it. Only then it is valued and accepted.

Be generous. In your behaviors, in your actions, in your thoughts. When you forgive someone, you are doing yourself a service.

Many physical problems start in the mind. When we hold a grudge, it makes us sick. It harms us more than them.

Don’t be a grumbler. Look at what was good in a situation, instead of what was wrong. Some of us are eternal sad sacks, looking gloomy and spreading gloom.

Talk a little less than necessary. Don’t keep harping on the past.

Cultivate some form of regular exercise. Even if you haven’t done it before. It’s never too late to start and the benefit starts from day one. It is the best anti-depressant and mood enhancer. A morning walk is most refreshing.

Smile a little more. It adds beauty to your face & do look good and feel good.

Clipped, pedicured toenails aside, it is more important to focus on having feet that are healthy in order to avoid many disorders.

We ask a lot of our feet, take them for granted but scarcely give a thought to how best to keep them healthy. Until, of course, something goes wrong.

The human foot is one of the most complicated parts of the body. Each foot has 33 joints, eight arches, 26 bones, more than a hundred muscles, ligaments, and tendons that all work in unison to allow movement. Foot disorders must be diagnosed and treated early, as they often have the potential to become very painful and incapacitating.

There are three common foot problems that when treated early will save you from a lot of pain and more importantly, from more complications.

Corns and Calluses

Anybody who has ever worn uncomfortable shoes has probably had foot corns and calluses problems. Foot corns are a result of too much pressure being applied on the foot’s skin, such as when the bones of the feet press against tight shoes and also press against each other. This foot condition is fairly easy to treat wear wider shoes or cushion pads to relieve pressure.

Infected Toenails

Sometimes, the things you do to clean your toenails can do more harm than good. Over clipping and digging deep into the sides can cause nails to throb, swell and become infected and lead to a more serious foot problem called Ingrown Toenails. Podiatrists usually remove the nail spike and clean the area. In the worst case, you may have to undergo a simple surgery.

Athlete’s Foot

Fungi are attracted to warm and moist areas of the body such as the feet – usually between sweaty toes. The fungi latch onto the foot and cause it to itch, and peel. If untreated early the fungi can even spread to the toenails and lead to what is called as Athlete’s Foot. There are many over the counter antifungal sprays, creams and powder available to treat this condition.

You exercise, swim, dance to keep your body fit. But what about your rapidly greying hair?

Following are some useful tips to remember:

You may be over exposed to intense heat or bright sunlight.

You may be under emotional stress

Be very careful about applying gels or creams on your scalp, as they choke the pores.

Wear a cap while swimming to protect your hair from chlorinated water and wash your hair as soon as you step out of the pool.

Make sure you don’t sleep with tightly braided hair. This may weaken hair roots.

Get oil massages regularly or thrice a week to boost health of hair.

Avoid styling products that contains alcohol, as these dry up hair very rapidly.

Use good natural shampoo only once in three days.

Yoga to prevent greying of hair

Anulom-vilom pranayam

Form the pranayam mudra with your right hand. Close your right nostril with your right thumb and exhale slowly through the left nostril. Now breathe in deep and slow. When the breath has been filled inside, close the left nostril with your ring and little fingers and lift the thumb off the right nostril. Exhale slowly from the right nostril. Repeat this with the other nostril.

Bhastrika pranayam

Sit in sukhasana, back straight and eyes closed. Place your hands on your knees in gyan mudra. Exhale completely through both nostrils, then inhale through both with some force. Repeat continuously till you feel tired. Time taken to inhale should equal the time taken to exhale. When you breathe in, your lungs should expand, not your belly.

Bhramari pranayam

Sit in sukhasana, back and neck straight. Breathe normally. Close both ears with your thumbs. Close your eyes. Keep your index fingers on your forehead near the agya chakra and the remaining three fingers on your eyes. Inhale slowly and fill your lungs with air. Then, as you exhale slowly, hum like a bee. Focus your attention on this sound.

Eye makeup is hard to remove because of the delicate area around your eyes. However, if not removed properly, makeup can cause the skin in that area to blacken. It can also result in the formation of wrinkles. Before you use your face cleanser, follow these simple eye makeup tips and tricks to remove eye makeup.

Eye Makeup Tips:
1. Apply a few drops of eye makeup remover on a cotton ball. You could alternatively use olive oil or Vaseline. Wet the cotton ball appropriately.
Working with one eye at a time, close your eye and move one of the cotton balls over your eye lid and lashes. Let it sit for a minute so it can work its way through the layers of makeup.

2. After a minute, gently swipe your eye in a downward direction to ensure all the eye makeup is off.

3. Open your eye and clean any residual makeup under your lashes.

Different skin types and their conditions can be treated with use of essential oils that can be applied in the morning and evening.

Normal skin

Healthy normal skin is neither too dry nor too oily.

Cleansing- with face wash or cleansing milk containing 1 to 2 drops of rose or chamomile.

Face oil- 2 to 4 drops of rose, patchouli, sage or germanium in jojoba or wheat germ oil is applied on a clean skin. The skin should be gently massaged with the finger tips, left for 15-30 minutes, then washed.

Face mask – apply fresh apricot pulp twice a week.

Dry skin

This is a fine type of skin and has a tendency to develop lines quickly.

Cleansing- with rose water.

Face oil – 2 to 3 drops of sandalwood, germanium in 1tsp wheat germ oil. For mature skin, patchouli with jojoba is useful. Apply with the finger tips, gentle massage and wash after 15 minutes.

Use herbal mask like cucumber paste once a week.

Oily skin

It is shiny and often with acne, blackheads or white heads.

Cleansing – with face wash or cleansing milk camphor.

Face oil – use antiseptic essential oils which are non-greasy and help in rebalancing the condition.

Oily and Acne skin

Cleansing is important, face wash 3-4 times everyday. Avoid makeup.

After each wash pat dry with tissue (avoid force as it spreads infection).

Face oil – 2 to 3 drops of lemon, juniper, lavender or tea tree oil in soya vegetable oil.

Face mask – put 2 to 3 drops of above mentioned oils in fuller’s clay and mix with water and apply twice a week.

Toning – In a spray bottle, fill rose water and put 2 drops of lemon or niaouli (shake well), and spray on face twice a day.

On the tip of acne tea tree oil can be applied, not to be massaged all over the face. Do not squeeze or touch the acne. A good diet, sleep, aerobic exercise and a well hydrated body is the key to good glowing skin.

Weak joints, wrinkled skin, graying hair are the signs of body succumbing to ageing. It is true that the body is constantly moving towards destruction, but there exist ways to arrest this process.

Aging is synonymous to loss of sukra in the body. Sukra is the subtle element that provides luster to hair and skin, strength to joints and organs, longevity and attraction normally seen in abundance in saints and evolved beings, which pulls one towards them unknowingly. This sukra gets dried up due to constant hyperactivity and excessive ama(toxin) produced in the body due to certain unhealthy practices.

The four major reasons for the loss of sukra in the body are emotional congestion, excessive physical labour, anger and overindulgence in sexual activities. A practitioner of sanatan kriya is able to check all four without having to make a conscious effort or suppressing any desires. There are also certain yogic measures to reverse the process of ageing by revitalizing the cells.

Yoga for Slowing Down The Aging Process:

Sarvangasana
Lie on the back. Inhale and using the support of hands, gently raise both the legs to an upright position while keeping them joined, toes pointing upwards. Thereafter, roll up the buttocks; the lower, middle and upper back such that the entire body up to the upper back is in one straight line, perpendicular to the ground. The shoulders and head are on the ground, chin tucked into the chest and hands support the body. Retain this poature. Release while exhaling.

Caution: People suffering from cervical spondylitis, slip disc and high blood pressure must not perform this asana.

Halasana

Lie on the back. Inhale and raise both the legs taking them over your head, to touch the toes on the floor. Palms maybe placed on the lower back to for support or can be taken backwards touching the toes. Hold this posture, exhaling return.

An extremely effective Ayurvedic antidote to ageing skin is black grapes. They maybe taken orally or crushed and applied on face.
Caution: People suffering from stomach ailments, spinal injuries or ailments of the neck should refrain from practicing this asana.

Injury to the eye or infection may lead to corneal ulceration. Delay in corneal ulcers treatment, unhygienic conditions and poor diet may cause corneal opacity and blindness.

Cornea is a transparent, avascular structure in front and centre of the eye. Any Injury to he eye or infection may lead to corneal ulceration. Delay in corneal ulcers treatment, unhygienic conditions and poor diet may cause corneal opacity and blindness. Being the most anterior part of eye ball, the cornea is exposed and hence prone to infection. Cornea is protected from minor infection by the normal defence mechanisms present in tears. If due to any reason quality or quantity of tears becomes poor, chances of corneal ulcer will be more.

Corneal Ulcers Causes:
Any kind of injury to cornea.
Corneal infection- bacterial, viral or fungal allergic most of the times corneal infection arises from exogenous source like infected foreign body, infected vegetative material and water borne(from swimming pool) or air borne infections. Because cornea is an avascular structure endogenous infections are of rare occurrence.

Corneal Ulcers Symptoms:

1. Severe pain in eye

2. Redness

3. Continuous watering from the eye

4. Intolerance to bright light

5. Discharge from eye especially in bacterial corneal ulcer.

6. Blurred vision due to corneal haze.

7. Swollen eye

Corneal Ulcers Prevention:

1. Incase of any infection, clean your eyes 2-3 times a day with clean water.

2. Immediately start broad spectrum antibiotic eye drop 3 – 4 times a day.

3. Hot fomentation gives comfort, reduces pain.

4. A balanced diet rich in vitamins helps in early healing.

5. Never use steroid eye drop as it causes corneal opacity and blindness.

6. Consult an eye specialist.

Corneal ulcer is an acute emergency and may lead to dreaded complication like corneal perforation, corneal opacity and blindness.

In India 30 million people are blind due to corneal infection. Once corneal opacity develops it requires corneal grafting. For corneal grafting there is requirement of cornea. In our country there because of lack of awareness of cornea donation.

Eyes are the windows of your soul. It is through your eyes that you see the world and its one of god’s greatest blessings along with the other five senses. There are several age-old practices to keep your eyes healthy for a long time. In ancient times there were no glasses and contact lenses. A simple kriya mentioned below might help solve this mystery.

Eye Exercise 1: Sit in vajra asana by folding your knees behind and sit on your legs. You can choose any other comfortable position too, if this is difficult but keep your back straight.

Keep a diya at a distance of two feet at the eye level. Light it with cow ghee.

Stare at the lit diya, at the bluish centre of the flame with a steady gaze. Continue gazing, even if the eyes start watering. Do it for about 10 minutes in the beginning, slowly increase the duration till whatever time you are comfortable.

Then slowly get up and fill your mouth with water. While keeping this water in your mouth wash your eyes with tap water. Then spit the water out. This water will be warm because heat gets released from the body. Do this at least twice or till the water temperature gets normal. This is a must after tratak.

Daily practice of this not only improves eyesight but makes your eyes lustrous and attractive.

Eye Exercise 2:Followed by sanatan kriya, the practice opens up etheric channels called nadis in the subtle body and generates intuitive abilities in the practitioner. Combined with chakra santulan pranayam, it endows one with improved eyesight and increased concentration. Along with this kriya, you can add walking with bare feet on grass to your daily routine. Do this early in the morning or around sunset, especially those people who often wear restrictive footwear. Since there are reflex connections between the soles of your feet and your visual areas of brain, such a walk is not only relaxing but also has a beneficial effect on your eyes.

Diet: For healthy functioning of eyes, one needs sufficient quantity of vitamin A, green leafy vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, meat (especially liver). A balanced diet with right proportion of proteins, carbohydrates and fats will help in keeping eyes healthy. For infants, mother’s milk is very important. It is during the time of weaning, that infants can develop vitamin A deficiency that may lead to a permanent impairment of vision.

Hygiene: Keeping eyes clean is important to ward off infections. First thing in the morning is to clean the eyes in running tap water. Do not splash water into eyes since it can result in an abrasion and the lids close as a reflex action without any cleansing being achieved. One should clean the after coming back from outdoors as well as before going to bed. It is equally important to have good hand hygiene. Do not touch your eyes with dirty, greasy hands. Make sure you sanitize your hands at regular intervals.

Desk jobs: Jobs are getting oriented around computers and laptops, it is important to take few precautions:
1.	Computer screen should be kept 30-50 cm away from eyes.

2.	Top edge of the screen should be in line with eye level.

3.	The chair should be ergonomically designed for comfort and correct posture.

4.	Take a break every 20-30 minutes to walk 20 paces, look beyond 20 feet and blink completely 20 times.

5.	Increase font size for comfort and adjust picture quality for comfortable viewing.

6.	White background generally gives less strain as contrast is more.

Special instructions for students:

1.	Read in adequate light. Keep a table lamp handy. Light should fall on the reading material from front or right to left.

2.	Maintain correct posture; do not read lying on your belly.

3.	Adequate sleep is important.
