Weak joints, wrinkled skin, graying hair are the signs of body succumbing to ageing. It is true that the body is constantly moving towards destruction, but there exist ways to arrest this process.

Aging is synonymous to loss of sukra in the body. Sukra is the subtle element that provides luster to hair and skin, strength to joints and organs, longevity and attraction normally seen in abundance in saints and evolved beings, which pulls one towards them unknowingly. This sukra gets dried up due to constant hyperactivity and excessive ama(toxin) produced in the body due to certain unhealthy practices.

The four major reasons for the loss of sukra in the body are emotional congestion, excessive physical labour, anger and overindulgence in sexual activities. A practitioner of sanatan kriya is able to check all four without having to make a conscious effort or suppressing any desires. There are also certain yogic measures to reverse the process of ageing by revitalizing the cells.

Yoga for Slowing Down The Aging Process:

Sarvangasana
Lie on the back. Inhale and using the support of hands, gently raise both the legs to an upright position while keeping them joined, toes pointing upwards. Thereafter, roll up the buttocks; the lower, middle and upper back such that the entire body up to the upper back is in one straight line, perpendicular to the ground. The shoulders and head are on the ground, chin tucked into the chest and hands support the body. Retain this poature. Release while exhaling.

Caution: People suffering from cervical spondylitis, slip disc and high blood pressure must not perform this asana.

Halasana

Lie on the back. Inhale and raise both the legs taking them over your head, to touch the toes on the floor. Palms maybe placed on the lower back to for support or can be taken backwards touching the toes. Hold this posture, exhaling return.

An extremely effective Ayurvedic antidote to ageing skin is black grapes. They maybe taken orally or crushed and applied on face.
Caution: People suffering from stomach ailments, spinal injuries or ailments of the neck should refrain from practicing this asana.

Here are some of the tips to keep a control your oily skin.

1. The most important step in dealing with oily skin is keeping it clean. The cleansing, toning, moisturizing routine is important but there’s no need to over wash your face. Instead, use a mild cleanser twice a day. Follow this up with an astringent to remove excess oil. Keeping make-up to the minimum and avoiding foundation also helps.

2. Those suffering from oily skin should avoid fried, spicy or fatty foods. Drinking more than a litre of water everyday is important to remove toxins. Also, snacking on healthy fruit like watermelon, muskmelon and green vegetables helps.

3. Don’t forget to use a toner. It cools the skin and helps reduce oil secretion.

4. Avoid soap, since it tends to strip the skin of all natural oils. While soap is known for drying the skin, it can cause more harm than good.

5. Don’t use hot water to wash your face. The combination of hot water and the chlorine found in tap water can damage the skin and cause chemical reactions. This can cause break outs, especially if the skin is sensitive.

6. Use a light moisturizer. Those with oily skin are afraid of using creams as they think their skin will break out more. However, using a light, oil-free moisturizer is necessary. Use something light, like a serum or face lotion, to give your face the moisture it needs.

7. Exfoliate once or twice a week. Exfoliating helps remove the dead skin cells and encourages cell turnover, which brings new young skin to the surface faster. if you’re acne-prone, be gentle on your skin.

Eating fruits rich in vitamin A can also give your skin that inner glow and radiance.

3.	Beta Carotene: German researchers have found that as little as 30mgs a day (the equivalent of 1 and ½ cups of cooked carrots) can help reduce redness due to sunburn. Also, when combined with vitamin E, other related carotenoids seem to reduce skin sensitivity. Best sources are carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, watermelons, papayas broccoli and spinach.

4.	Vitamin B: They help convert into energy for metabolism and enzymes that maintain normal skin functions, like keeping the oil-producing glands going to keep the skin moist and smooth. Firm skin shows youthfulness and helps fight wrinkles.

9.	Water: Take lots of water to cleanse and detoxify your system. It also helps to keep your skin well hydrated. According to the Mayo Clinic, intake of 8 to 10 glasses of water is recommended. As the water flushes down your taxins, your skin will begin to glow. Though there are some contradictory studies which suggest that we should not drink too much water, we recommend at least 8 glasses.

10.	Exercise: It improves blood circulation and keeps your skin firm and healthy. Following a daily exercise schedule of 45 minutes to an hour works wonders for your skin. Brisk walking and yoga along with facial exercise are beneficial. Or you could go on the treadmill, breathe or play, whatever makes your skin glow.
