Gum disease is a fairly common occurrence and one with severe health and emotional consequences. It is often caused by long term neglect and a casual attitude towards oral health. It exists in mild or severe forms and can wreck havoc in the oral cavity, resulting in early loss of teeth, bad breath, bleeding and swollen gums, reduction in chewing efficiency, etc. All this has an impact on one’s self-confidence and even psychological trauma in severe cases.

Gum Disease Causes:

Plaque and tartar, which form as a result of bacteria in our mouth, need to be constantly removed by correct brushing, flossing and regular visits to the dentist. If any of these aren’t followed, tartar builds up causing a mild form of gum disease called gingivitis. At this stage, the gums become red, swollen and bleed easily. If not treated at this stage, this disease spreads further to the bone and the supporting structure of the teeth (periodontitis). A few of the other factors, which influence this disease, are genetic susceptibility, smoking and chewing tobacco, hormonal changes in women, stress, diabetes, certain medications and diseases like cancer and AIDS.

Gum disease prevention:

Brush twice a day with the right technique. If unsure, consult your dentist to understand do’s and don’ts of brushing.

Rinse thoroughly after every meal.

Floss daily.

Quit smoking and chewing tobacco.

Have a well-balanced diet. This strengthens your immune system.

Avoid excess sugar.

Periodontal disease is linked to stress. Destressing yourself regularly has numerous benefits.

Drink plenty of water.

Visit your dentist for a professional cleanup at least once every six months.

Bad breath is usually brought on by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth. However, there are several other possible causes that affect the airways, oesophagus and stomach that can also lead to bad breath.

Bad breath, medically called halitosis, can result from poor dental health habits and may be a sign of other health problems. Bad breath can also be made worse by the types of foods you eat and other unhealthy lifestyle habits. People of any age may have halitosis.

Researchers have determined that bad breath typically begins when the waste produced by bacteria in the mouth, nose or stomach comes into contact with the air.

There are numerous nasal triggers for bad breath. Nasal dysfunction, including a genetic abnormality in the nasal passage, may inhibit proper mucus flow. The bacteria found in sinusitis, post-nasal drip and allergies may pass from the nose to the back of the tongue where it can lie dormant due to improper saliva flow or poor dental hygiene.

When bacterial plaque is not removed from the teeth, the gums or between the teeth, it continues to grow and ultimately may lead to halitosis, tooth decay and gum disease

Some types of bad breath are considered to be fairly normal. They usually are not health concerns. One example is “morning mouth.” This occurs because of changes in your mouth while you sleep. During the day, saliva washes away decaying food and odors. The body makes less saliva at night. Your mouth becomes dry, and dead cells stick to your tongue and to the inside of your cheeks. When bacteria use these cells for food, they produce a foul odor.

Bad breath treatment using Fenugreek:

Among the several home remedies for halitosis, the use of fenugreek has proved most effective. A tea made from the seeds of this vegetable should be taken regularly for correcting the condition. This tea is prepared by putting one teaspoon of seeds in half a litre of cold water and allowing it to simmer for fifteen minutes over a low flame. It should then be strained and used as tea.

Bad breath treatment using Avocado:

Another effective remedy for bad breath is avocado, which is far superior to any mouth lotion or remedies for this condition. It effectively removes intestinal putrefaction or decomposition which is one of the most important causes of bad breath.
Halitosis treatment using

Bad breath treatment using Guava:

Unripe guava is useful in halitosis. It is rich in tannic, malic, oxalic, and phosphoric acids as well as calcium, oxalate, and manganese. Chewing it is an excellent tonic for the teeth and gums. It helps cure bleeding from gums and stops bad breath. Chewing tender leaves of guava tree also stops bleeding from gums and bad breath.

Chewing gum:

Oral dryness is one of the contributing factors to bad breath – dry mouth can increase bacterial buildup and cause or worsen bad breath. Chewing sugarless gum can help increase the saliva production, and thereby help reduce bad breath. Chewing may aid particularly when the mouth is dry, or when one cannot perform oral hygiene procedures after meals (especially meals rich in protein). Chewing gum aids in provision of saliva, which washes away oral bacteria, has antibacterial properties and promotes mechanical activity which helps cleanse the mouth. Some chewing gums contain special anti-odor ingredients, such as Breathanol™. Some common folk remedies that are somewhat similar to chewing gum are chewing on fennel seeds, cinnamon sticks, mastic gum or fresh parsley. It is advised to chew gum for no longer than 4-5 minutes, and not practice that habit too often, or else some damage might be caused to the temporomandibular joint (the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull).

Scrape the tongue.

Hold the tongue with something made of cotton (gauze, flannel, towel etc.). Do not use paper as it will disintegrate. Hold the tongue out and steady. Place the tongue scraper as far back as possible and scrape forwards firmly, holding the tongue all the time. You may gage initially but the gag reflex subsides quickly. Repeat the scraping until you have covered the whole surface of the tongue, especially towards the back, this is a major source of halitosis.

Most people believe bad breath is caused by eating or drinking consumables that are especially odorous. While this is partially true, a more in depth explaination is helpful to those of us who suffer from bad breath and are searching for the causes and cures.

According to experts. Bad breath is caused by “volatile sulfur compounds” in your mouth. These compounds are produced by the bacteria in your mouth. The odor causing compounds are found in amoung your teeth, under the top layer of your tongue and in your throat and tonsils.

Dry Mouth
Dry mouth is a common symptom with people suffering from halitosis, and it is one of the main causes of halitosis. Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, causes a number of changes to occur in the mouth. First of all the bacteria become more concentrated in the saliva, and they tend to volatilize or evaporate more readily into the air. When this occurs, bad breath will be stronger and more noticeable at greater distances.

The first and simplest thing we recommend patients do is be sure that they are consuming at least the recommended daily allowance of water which is eight glasses of water per day. Chewing sugarless gum also helps to increase salivary flow while chewing. Despite numerous products claiming they can eliminate or significantly improve dry mouth conditions, we have only found one product so far that significantly helps the problem. Besides causing halitosis, xerostomia often results in a metallic or bitter taste in the mouth. Without a doubt xerostomia is very difficult to eliminate entirely, but even if a patient’s xerostomia remains we can still effectively treat their halitosis condition.

Diet
When a person does not brush or floss their teeth thoroughly, food particles may remain in the mouth. These particles may rot and cause foul odors. In addition, food particles over time can promote the growth of bacteria, which can also cause foul odors. The bacteria can also lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Foods with strong odors also affect the air a person exhales. Foods commonly known to contribute to bad breath include onions and garlic, exotic spices (such as curry), some cheeses, fish, and acidic beverages such as coffee. Foods are absorbed into the bloodstream and then transferred to the lungs, causing noticeable odors when exhaled. These foods may also cause gastrointestinal upset and belching, which can contribute to bad breath. In addition, certain supplements such as fish oil capsules can contribute to bad breath.

Low carbohydrate diets may also cause what is known as ‘ketone breath.’ So-called ‘low carb’ diets cause the body to burn fat as its energy source. The end-product of making this energy are ketones, which cause a fruity acetone-like odor on the breath when exhaled.

Dental problems

Poor dental hygiene and periodontal disease can be a source of bad breath. If you don’t brush and floss daily, food particles remain in your mouth, collecting bacteria that can emit chemicals, such as hydrogen sulfide — the same compound that gives rotten eggs their characteristic smell. A colorless, sticky film of bacteria (plaque) forms on your teeth and if not brushed away, plaque can irritate your gums (gingivitis) and cause tooth decay. Eventually, plaque-filled pockets can form between your teeth and gums (periodontitis) worsening this problem — and your breath. The microscopic uneven surface of the tongue also can trap bacteria that produce odors. And dentures that aren’t cleaned regularly or don’t fit properly can harbor odor-causing bacteria and food particles.

Alcohol consumption causes digestive problems which leads to bad breath. In addition, alcohol dries out the mouth, which reduces saliva production. See below for more information.

Tobacco Products

In addition to causing bad breath, smoking or chewing tobacco-based products can stain teeth, irritate gum tissue, and exacerbate tooth decay.

Are you insecure when you speak in social gatherings, or do you struggle to make a positive impression when you smile? These are the common problems associated with people who suffer from tooth loss due to injury, disease, trauma or heredity.

Perhaps not practical or what you want to do but I would recommend that you see a hygienist regularly and for the average person that is every six months. A good hygienist will not just remove the stain from your teeth at the front but professionally clean and polish all your teeth above and below the gums. Your teeth will then feel smooth and free of tartar (calcified bacteria) and become easier to keep clean.

Why tooth is so important?
If you loose teeth many studies have shown that what you eat changes, you can not eat the same foods and your diet becomes softer and less nutritious. This means you are at an increased risk of intestinal problems such as irritable bowel and even bowel cancer.

Generally people that have sensitive teeth have started to get them gradually. It is not something that happens over night. It is a slow process that at first we do not notice when our gums decide to move away from the teeth. The process is call “receding gums”. Being that the gums blanket and guard the teeth roots then they have a very important function. Therefore when they draw away the nerves and roots are now exposed. If you eat or drink anything hot or cold or even breathe in the air, you can have intense pain. If the pain is intense and frequent then you should see your dentist as soon as possible because the nerve might be exposed.

The best way to stop sensitive teeth and to stop pain is prevention. You must look to keeping your gums and your teeth healthy. This means brushing, but brushing correctly. Do not abuse you gums by trying to brush your teeth hard. Reduce the pressure you use especially when near the gum line. If you currently have sensitive teeth, you should attempt using a gentler hand when brushing or use an electric toothbrush or water pick. These will all be gentler on your teeth and gums.

An another way to take care of your sensitive teeth is to use toothpaste that is good to your teeth and allows you to develop your gum health. There are diverse products out geared to sensitive teeth use that contain potassium nitrate. Potassium nitrate is a substance that will lessen swelling and the aching that goes with sensitive teeth. There are lots of dental creams to try, but Dentists seem to choose Sensodyne because it relieves pain by bathing the nerve where it starts. Here are some of the tooth brushing instructions and tooth brushing techniques.

Learning of Tooth brushing Techniques:
It is perhaps the only way people clean teeth in the home environment. To effectively and safely clean the teeth one needs to know proper method and the occasions, when and how the teeth should be brushed, which unfortunately they are not in a position to learn correctly and just use their commonsense. One needs to learn by viewing a demonstration.

Selection of Tooth Brush:
In the past, hog bristles were used. Now scientifically designed brushes by different brands and features are available like having hard, medium and soft brush bristles made of nylon, with variable shapes and sizes of brush handle and head bristles. In an ideal tooth brush, the bristles should be trimmed and flat. The diamond shaped brush head offers better accessibility to the backside teeth. Some people prefer short head, which can be easily used for backside teeth.

Tooth Brushing Technique:
If there is no problem in the way one brushes the teeth, one should continue the same way. In case there is a problem, a nearby dentist is the best person to advise the right method of brushing.

Frequency of Tooth Brushing:
Although people mostly people are used to brush teeth once a day, brushing of teeth twice a day is more beneficial, once after breakfast and once after dinner so that during entire day and night there are no food particles sticking to the tooth, a source of bacterial action and bad smell not liked by people, when one talks to them. Many people hurriedly do tooth brushing leaving major portion of tooth surface and gums not properly cleaned.

The hydrogen peroxide formula in the product gets activated with the UV rays from sunlight and thus your teeth looks bright and shiny while it is exposed to sun and tanning beds. Some of the home remedies for teeth whitening are:

Strawberries are very effective for this purpose. Although other berries such as cranberries and blueberries can make teeth dark but strawberries have special elements which help in whitening.

Sodium bicarbonate or baking soda is one of the most effective bleaching agents you can get at home.

Lemon juice is available in every household and it works as a great home remedy for teeth whitening. You can rub lemon juice regularly while brushing or can use it separately. But lemon has lots of citrus acid which can be harmful for the enamel. Hence, you must use very little amount of it.

Apples are one more home remedies for teeth whitening. It works in a different way than the previous agents. Apple triggers the secretion of saliva which helps in cleaning the stains. You can use apple cider vinegar which is one of the most useful teeth whitening agents.

Baking soda is used for many things around the house from a deodorizer to a cleaning agent. You have probably seen toothpaste that contains baking soda. But did you know that you can achieve the same effect by mixing half a teaspoon of baking soda with regular toothpaste? Another option is to mix baking soda with water and apply this mixture directly to your toothbrush. While baking soda will not actually bleach your teeth, it will get rid of some stains and give your teeth a nice shine. Using baking soda is safe, but you need to be careful not to use it too often. It is somewhat abrasive and can damage the enamel on your teeth.

Finally for the last method, all it takes is a bit of moderation. It is best to stay off food and drinks that can accelerate tooth staining and plaque build up. Coffee and colas would make very good examples for these. Brush your teeth immediately if you must indulge yourself with these substances.

Another piece of advice that centers on caution is to avoid using products that you are not sure about. Many products will actually contain harmful chemicals but are sold as natural products. To remedy this, go to your dentist and seek advice for the best way forward. You can ask them about home remedies as you get checked out.
